When a family in Wexford decided that they wanted a home theater that was anything but ordinary, they turned to us to make their vision a reality. Since our customer is a successful commercial contractor himself, he knew that getting the little details just right was going to be the key to the success of this home remodeling project. Thanks to our extensive design-build experience, we had the tools, knowledge and expertise to create a home theater that combined old world elegance with modern technology.
Setting the Tone
If you’ve ever visited a theater built in the early part of the 20th century, you know that those buildings are not only functional, but also stylish. Ornate columns and deep cherry wainscoting and woodwork add a touch of sophistication, while plush seats enhance guests’ comfort. Our customer wanted that kind of elegance for his home theater – plus all of the latest technological features.
The Wish List
Every project we take on involves an in-depth conversation with the homeowners to discuss their needs, and this project was no exception. During the discussion, we learned that the family not only needed a space that embodied old world elegance, but wanted a state-of-the-art audio-visual system and a wall-size TV projector screen that would integrate seamlessly with the room’s design.
They also requested a fiber-optics ceiling that looked just like the night sky, complete with constellations that corresponded to each of the family member’s birthdays. There’s nothing we like better than a challenge, and we were excited to begin work on the project.
Making Dreams Come True
We created the space by combining the former outdoor dining space with a small storage room on the other side of the wall. Our designer not only had to accommodate the changing floor levels needed for risers, but also had to make sure that the finished elevation would match the existing foundation level and ceiling height.
Getting the little details just right was one of the most satisfying aspects of this project. Working from a constellation diagram provided by the customer, we created a large template for the ceiling. Since stars aren’t uniformly bright, we knew we had to find a way to make the indoor sky look realistic. We hand punched holes of various sizes and then placed large and small fiber optic lights in the drywall to create the desired effect.
Speakers are a crucial part of any home theater, but they’re not always the most attractive addition. We hid the speakers, woofers and tweeters behind easily accessible wall panels covered with acoustic fabric.
Custom cherry stain on the woodwork helped establish the old world feel, while hand-painted gold leaf added luxury to the room. Because the theater doors set the tone for the entire space, we knew we run-of-the-mill doors just wouldn’t do. We consulted an upholsterer and created custom tufted doors that added drama and elegance to the home theater.
