Stunning Mt. Lebanon kitchen remodel, addition and deck on Festival of Homes tour

kitchen-remodel-smallOne of our latest, large home remodeling projects is on the Festival of Homes free tour the last weekend in September.  Here’s a sneak preview of this Mt. Lebanon kitchen+ design-and-build project completed in July. Come see it. Get INSPIRED.  Get IDEAS.

We think it’s a great example supporting our tagline: “Advancing the art and science of living.” To add some drama, this story begins when a near tragedy unlocks a Dream for this young Pittsburgh couple.

fallen treeIn the fall of 2010 a microburst from a storm toppled a huge tree onto the Mt. Lebanon couple’s home. Master Remodelers was called in to repair the damage.  During the repair work, the couple—both educators in the public schools—expressed their remodeling Dream for a larger, grand kitchen.

Planning their Dream Kitchen

Kitchen-before-remodelingFor the new kitchen—to replace their outdated, small kitchen (photo at right)—they wanted an island, room for their dining room table, many great appliances, an easy connection to the outdoors, and windows onto a beautiful wooded scene.

kitchen-design-Mt.-LebanonAs we finished the repair work, we began planning and designing with the couple, using our time-tested remodeling planning strategy.  Design is the key to our Pittsburgh remodeling successes and awards. Master Remodelers uses state-of-the-art technology—including 3-D design of the interior and exterior shown here—for both creative purposes and for construction and cost-control precision.

In January 2011 construction began, starting with initial demolition.

Additional structural reinforcements were needed—the kitchen would be growing from 135 sq. ft. to 390 sq. ft., mostly through an addition to the back of the house.

New living spaces, New lifestyle

kitchen-remodel-Mt.LebanonThe new kitchen features a number of new lifestyle luxuries for the couple, expecting their first child in November:  big, beautiful Marvin windows; Kohler and Brizo plumbing fixtures; a variety of Wolf, Subzero and Miele appliances, including a wine chilling cabinet and warming drawer; custom cabinetry; granite counter tops; oak flooring; custom Travertine back splash with glass tile accents; a high tech sound system with invisible ceiling speakers.

Favoring our Sustainability option for remodeling, the couple also chose some ‘lite green’ options for their kitchen remodel, including low VOC paints and finishes that minimize off-gassing into the home, energy efficient blown-in insulation in the walls, a sophisticated lighting system with low energy LED lights, and a SmartTouch faucet that conserves water and is more hygienic.

Kitchen-deck-additionThe new deck—off the kitchen addition—adds 300 sq. ft. of new outdoor living and entertaining space.

And more Sustainability… With low maintenance and durability in mind, the addition uses pre-painted Hardie concrete siding; the deck uses Azek products which are stain, scratch and mold resistant, with a lifetime warranty.
